Couching

For reverse appliqué, three pieces of fabric were selected for the outer border design and the inner surface of the piece. After drawing the design, the pieces are layered and secured with pins.

Straight stitching was applied on the design lines. Areas of fabric are cut away to reveal fabrics below. The straight stitching is then couched with yarns.

Now that the ‘frame’ section is done, the next step is choosing colors and composition for the center.

Since this piece needed to include the Tarot and the Moon cards, I’ve added the moon.  The addition of swirling designs has begun to take shape.

The swirls were appliquéd with fusible web. Once the design is in place, it is time to fuse it to the background with steam heat.  Pins were used as placeholders so the paper backing could be removed.

Paper backing is removed by slashing the paper with an “x”, using a pin. Bending the fabric away from the “x” pops the scratches, making it easy to peel the paper off without disturbing the glue. Now the swirl is ready to fuse to the fabric. Fused edges are finished with couching.
