About

A self-taught artist, I’m a University of Northern Iowa elementary education graduate and an English and education graduate from Iowa State University.  I’ve studied with internationally known quilt artists including David Walker, Jane Sassaman, the art quilt team of Susan Shie and James Acord, Wendy Huhn and Nancy Eha.  I’ve been teaching quilting since 1997.

I create original designs sculpted by fabric, extensive free-motion quilting and beaded embellishment.  My works reflect diverse topics from the spiritual realm, to nature, to technology. In the Moonstone series, I incorporate my love of reading and writing in ‘speaking quilts.’ These art quilts contain sewn writings of inspired phrases, thoughts and famous quotations.

Featured in Quilting Arts Magazine Fall 2004 (Bead Collage) and Fall 2001 (Artist Spotlight & Cover) as well as the 2003 Calendar, I’ve also been published in the Kansas City Star, Kansas City Artist’s Coalition’s publication, Show and Tell, Quilter’s Newsletter and The Point, a Sprint Corporation internal magazine article, “The Net Worth of Art and Science.” I am also be featured on the new HGTV Series, Crafters Coast to Coast in a show about The Artful Needle Book.

I’ve recently been in two book publications.  The Quilting Arts Book and Embellished Mini Quilts. Spirit Quest: Moonstone series will be the featured cover artwork for a collection of poems published by Martina Newberry  called Late Night Radio.

My art quilts can be found  in corporate as well as private collections across the United States and internationally.  Feel free to contact me with questions or comments.

  2. Dear Deana,

didn’t find where to contact you so I write a comment to your post and you can delete it after you read it.

I own a webshop for quilt and textile hobby materials and also write a crative blog in dutch. the address of the blog is: http://blog.quiltenhobby.nl.
I recently started a column in my blog where I introduce each time another Art-Quilter.
I describe shortly the artist, show a couple of art pieces, sometimes includes a couple of lovely quotes about the process of work, quilting in general and anything that inspires and close with the links for further reading like websites of the artist, the artist blog, photo’s gallery, published interviews, etc.

In this email I am asking your permission to include in my blog post a couple of photo’s of your art, of course with a link to where they are originaly from.

I wrote already about 4 art quilters and you can get an idea of what I write here http://blog.quiltenhobby.nl/rubrieken/spotlight/ There is always an english translation under the dutch text.

Personaly I am inspired by your beading and that is what I do at the moment: quilts with lots of beads and bead collages.

    Best Regards
